Unlock the Potential of eIDAS 2.0

Explore the future of digital trust services with Namirial

What is eIDAS?

Introduction to eIDAS 1 and its expanded framework

The eIDAS (Electronic Identification, Authentication and Trust Services) Regulation, initially adopted in 2014 and fully implemented in 2016, set the foundation for secure and seamless digital interactions across the European Union.

Beyond governing electronic identities, eIDAS 1 also established standards for various trust services, including electronic signatures, seals, timestamps, and website authentication. This regulation laid the groundwork for a digital single market, enabling cross-border transactions with legal certainty.

eIDAS 2.0: enhancing Digital Identity and Trust

The European Union’s eIDAS 2.0 Regulation, an updated version of the Electronic Identification, Authentication and Trust Services regulation eIDAS, represents a transformative advance entered into force on May 20, 2024. It is designed to enhance security, interoperability, and cohesion across Europe’s digital landscape, expanding on the initial framework to meet the dynamic needs of modern businesses and citizens.

To be more precise, eIDAS 2.0 means the regulation (EU) 2024/1183 of the European Parliament and of the Council amends regulation (EU) No 910/2014 regarding the establishment of the European framework for a digital identity. The main services covered by the eIDAS regulation are:

Digital
Identities

Electronic
Signatures

Time
Stamps

Web
Certificates

Certified
communication

Electronic
Archiving

In November 2024, there are 35 identity schemes notified under eIDAS, which facilitate the use of national electronic identification (eID) systems across borders. eIDAS 2.0 is set to revolutionize these schemes further, notably through the European Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI Wallet) and an enriched suite of trust services.

Key Changes and Opportunities
with eIDAS 2.0

The transition from eIDAS 1 to eIDAS 2.0 introduces significant updates,
which promise to redefine digital interactions across the EU.

European Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI Wallet)

The EUDI Wallet is poised to become a secure, intuitive tool that enables individuals to store, and share verified attributes such as age, residency, and professional qualifications. This wallet will facilitate cross-border transactions with enhanced security, eliminating the need for repeated identity verifications.

Expansion of Trust Services

In addition to existing services, eIDAS 2.0 introduces new opportunities, including eArchiving and Electronic Attestation of Attributes (EAA). These advancements provide innovative methods for securely storing and verifying digital data, bolstering the reliability of online engagements.

Cross-Sector interoperability

By standardizing trusted digital identities, eIDAS 2.0 fosters improved interactions across industries such as finance, utilities, healthcare, and government. This framework simplifies user authentication, strengthens compliance, and mitigates fraud risks by leveraging verified attributes..

New Trust services: practical applications and innovations

The new trust services in eIDAS 2.0 introduce practical and forward-looking applications.

Key opportunities include:

eArchiving

This service ensures the long-term security and accessibility of critical digital records, safeguarding document integrity and traceability. It is particularly valuable in sectors like finance, healthcare, and public administration, where regulatory compliance is crucial.

Digital attestation and Attribute verification

The ability to verify specific attributes, such as age or qualifications, simplifies onboarding processes and enhances compliance. Organizations can confidently authenticate identities and optimize operations with data sourced and verified at the origin.

The regulation also emphasizes the EUDI Wallet as a game-changing solution that enhances cross-border digital transactions, offering opportunities to simplify various identity verification scenarios.
